Getting to Ord is easier than you think, whichever way you choose to travel to Skye. Riverview Cottage is just 20 miles (30 minutes) by road from the Skye Bridge or just 15 minutes to the CalMac Ferry Terminal at Armadale. Many visitors like to come one way by the ferry, often voted as one of the best crossings in Scotland, or to return by the Skye Bridge. Although there are several services each day from Inverness and Glasgow by inter-city coach getting around on the west coast without a car means that you don't get to see the best of the area. We would be delighted to help you with travel plans, whichever mode of transport you choose!
We've listed below some of the ways to reach us whether you are coming from Inverness and the north of Scotland, or from the south via Glasgow or Edinburgh.
By road from Glasgow or Edinburgh
From Glasgow and the north west take the A82 towards Loch Lomond and travel north to Fort William. At Invergarry turn left for the A87 for Kyle of Lochalsh, the Skye Bridge and Portree. 7 miles north of the Bridge turn left on to the A851 heading for Armadale and after 11 miles turn right at the sign showing Ord, Tokavaig and Tarskavaig. After 4 miles and just before the river turn right, cross our cattle grid and you will see Riverview on the right. Welcome.
If you plan to travel to Ord from Edinburgh or the north east take the M90, then A9 towards Inverness and at Dalwhinnie turn left on the A86 signed Spean Bridge and Kyle. At Spean Bridge join the A82 as above.
By road from Inverness
Many visitors to Skye fly in to Inverness Airport which is 110 miles from Ord. From the airport head towards the city centre and follow the A9 across the Kessock Bridge and head north. Follow the signposts for Ullapool A835 and at Garve follow the A832 towards Achnasheen and Strathcarron. The road passes Loch Carron and joins the A87 near Kyle. Follow the directions to Ord above.
By road from Fort William and Mallaig (using the CalMac ferry to Armadale)
Just north of Fort William turn left on the A830 for Mallaig (45 minutes). In the summer months there are 8 crossings Monday to Saturday with CalMac and 4 on Sundays. We advise our guests to always book ahead for the car as many of the ferry services can be fully booked during peak periods. After leaving the ferry head north and after 6 miles turn left at the sign showing Ord, Tokavaig and Tarskavaig. Riverview is 4 miles along the road as in the directions above.
If you do plan to come via public transport, train, coach or from the airports we would be happy to help you plan your trip. There are frequent train services from Glasgow to Mallaig and Inverness to Kyle. Car Hire is available in Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig at reasonable rates, but generally in the Highlands and Islands public transport is limited and you certainly won't see as much if you don't have the use of a car. Bikes can be hired at several places locally.
